Classroom Management
On December, 13th, I observed four lessons, with 3rd grade's, who usually have six English classes a week, In the first three classes there were twelve students, seven girls and five boys, and in the last class nine students, six boys and three girls.

The aim of the lesson was to help children develop special strategies for listening through activating the schemata, while listening stage, and post-listening.
Topics of the lessons were, "My Friend Meg"," What Is Important for Good Health", and" Swim to Keep Fit".

During the observation of my mentor teacher classes, I noticed some strategies that the teacher used in class
in the way to promote the effective learning environment. She gives the students
good atmosphere by smiling to students any time she sees them, avoids showing anger, keeps herself
professional, and accepts students for who they are. The teacher encourages students by giving positive feedback, as children are glad to be praised by nature.
She makes students engaged in a lesson, focused, interested and connected to her.
She gives equal treatment to all of her students. She knows what materials the students will use, and how to distribute them, besides organizing the students by group work or individual work.
She also knows how much time will the activities take and what she should give the students.

During my one-week observation, I saw how the teacher handled inappropriate behaviours that arose during the lessons; I focused on five students, who did not behave well during the lessons. In the middle of the lesson, when a girl was not concentrated in the lesson, by not being interested in one of
activities teacher gave, and she started to talk to her colleague, but it was just enough for a teacher to say her name aloud to get her attention and let her on track again.

During the group work activities, there were two students disturbing the teacher instructions, it was hard for me to figure out what was the cause of their
behavior, but I think it could be feeling bored, not interested, or it just could be they
wanted to make noise and they had extra energy that they wanted to use! However, the teacher made them stand for a while and they had their time out to calm down in a
comfort zone.
At the first of the lesson when one student boy was talking while the teacher was saying instructions, my intuition that he just wanted to disturb the teacher talk. To prevent his misbehaviour it was enough for the teacher to write his name on the blackboard. When teacher writes student's name on the blackboard, student reads it seriously as warning of the teacher that she would give him a minus on a behaviour chart as she needs to evaluate the student's behaviour on each lesson.

At the last of the lesson, one pupil was misbehaving
( talking aloud and making sounds), I think he was bored, and tired from that lesson of the day,
teacher responded to that behaviour asking him to leave the classroom and when he feels that he's ready to behave well, he can come back to the class. He came back after disappearing for a minute.
one of the techniques teacher use is a brain break, it's an exercise that helps the hemispheres to collaborate by doing some exercises that involve two sides of the body- crossing the left and the right side, eg. touching the left ear with the right hand etc.
there are many other ways teacher use in the class to keep control, she focuses on behaviour not the student.

Thanks for your post! I have to admit that your mentor teacher sounds like she is extremely professional and well-prepared for her classes, which I think is fantastic! In my opinion, the variety of the methods used for misbehavior shows that she is flexible and can easily respond to the students needs and find a fitting method of ‘discipling’ them in a way that would be effective in stopping the disruptive behavior. However, is there a system that the students know clearly - like 1. saying their name is a warning 2. writing on the blackboard is a more serious warning 3. there are bigger consequences, or are all the behaviors managed case-by-case?
